Newcastle United’s pursuit of Allan Saint-Maximin has stalled in recent days, but the Nice attacker as in England last night for pre-season action.

The Magpies were expecting to sign Saint-Maximin last week, with the Shields Gazette reporting that a £20million deal was nearing completion.

However, almost a week has passed now, and Saint-Maximin is still a Nice player. News of Newcastle’s move has dramatically slowed down, and it’s now unclear whether he will be joining after all.

The 22-year-old speedster hit six goals and three assists in 34 appearances last season, but Patrick Vieira struggled to really find the right position for him.

Formerly of Saint-Etienne, Monaco, Hannover and Bastia, Saint-Maximin hasn’t really lived up to his early billing, and his signing would be a risk for Newcastle.

Last night, Saint-Maximin was in England for pre-season friendly action, as Nice travelled to take on Premier League side Burnley at Turf Moor.

Burnley hammered Nice 6-1 in an absolute thrashing, with Saint-Maximin scoring Nice’s only goal of the game from close range as little more than a consolation.

However, Saint-Maximin appeared to impress Burnley fans, as some Clarets supporters took to Twitter to urge the club to make a move for the Frenchman, believing that they should hijack Newcastle’s move and sign Saint-Maximin up for some added pace to Sean Dyche’s side.
