Burnley signed Charlie Taylor from Leeds United last month.
The Clarets are on the eye out for a replacement for Michael Keane, who was sold for £25 million to Everton.
But Dyche is yet to find the right player and has been experimenting by playing former Leeds United left-back Charlie Taylor in the centre.
Taylor, 23, signed from Leeds after his contract expired, which netted the Whites £7 million.
Dyche said: “We’ve got three recognised centre halves and Charlie Taylor, who I think could adapt into a very good centre half actually.
“We haven’t brought him in for that reason but played him there the other night just because I like the look of him. I like to be open-minded with my players and where else they could play.
“If one is right for us, and fits what we’re about, then we would be interested. But only if they can better what we’re doing at the moment.”
The only time Taylor played in another position for Leeds was when former boss Neil Redfearn selected him on the left wing in the 2014/15 season.
Shining in central defence in a couple of pre-season games is one thing, but stepping it up to Premier League level is another, a standard at which Taylor has never played.
Moving to Burnley is already the biggest challenge of his career, and adapting to play at centre-back and fill a key role for the club will make it even tougher, but he has one thing in his favour, manager Sean Dyche is clearly a big believer he has a long term future at Turf Moor.
