Vincent Kompany is now interested in signing Souleyman Doumbia as part of his rebuild at Turf Moor, which will see Burnley rival Birmingham City and Lyon for the Angers left-back.

That’s according to Foot Mercato, who note the Clarets are one of several suitors lining up deals for the 25-year-old. Doumbia has put sides from around Europe on alert through his performances at the Stade Raymond Kopa last season under SCO manager Gerald Baticle.

The Ivory Coast international offered a dynamic threat from the left-flank over his 27 Ligue 1 appearances. He predominantly played wing-back in Baticle’s favoured 3-4-1-2 formation, but is also adept at playing in a more natural full-back role to earn strong transfer interest.

Lyon are considering a move to sign Doumbia from Angers as SCO only value the three-cap star at €4m (£3.5m). The Stade Raymond Kopa outfit have set a reasonable asking price as he is now in the last year of the contract he signed after moving to western France in 2020.

Les Gones are assessing his potential transfer as one of several left-backs for boss Peter Bosz. Lyon also admire Nicolas Tagliafico but the Ajax star has not made the Ligue 1 side a priority. Villarreal’s Pervis Estupinan and Benfica ace Alex Grimaldo are also on their radar.

Burnley rivalling Birmingham, Lyon interest as Kompany considers Doumbia deal

Doumbia’s versatility to play in three and four-man defences also has Burnley, Birmingham and Union Berlin interested in his transfer. Each could offer the Ivorian a long-term home, with Foot Mercato suggesting Lyon only view the defender as a very temporary solution.

Kompany could also trail interest from Birmingham to see Burnley sign Doumbia as part of his rebuild after replacing Sean Dyche. L’Equipe, via GFFN, reported earlier this month that the Blues and Union Berlin were in talks for the defender intrigued by a move to Germany.
