Is Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling really better than Arsenal Mesut Ozil?

Michael Owen’s anti-Arsenal comments have once again accused a stir, this time regarding Mesut Ozil.

Owen had told BT Sport that he viewed Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling a better player than the German, ahead of the Gunners’ 4-1 win at The Emirates on Saturday.

He refused to back down from this after the game despite attracting huge criticism on social media.

He responded via his Sportlobster account: “It seems my claim that Sterling is a better player than Ozil made some headlines today. Is there a debate? Not even close.”

Bundesliga expert and Sky Germany pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft issued a short rebuttal to Owen via Twitter this morning:

Former Werder Bremen ace Ozil won the German Cup as a youngster, while Sterling is yet to get his hands on any silverware in his career so far.

Ozil has reached football’s peak already, a World Cup winner last summer. His form at Arsenal had been inconsistent over the first one and a half seasons of his Premier League career, but since January he has been one of the club’s best players.

Sterling has two more goals and assists than Ozil in the Premier League this season, but across a period of 14 more games.

As Liverpool fans debating Sterling’s as yet unsigned new contract will be well aware, the England international has proved nothing yet.
