According to The Sun, Newcastle United are lining up a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Everton striker is being linked with a £35m move to St James’ Park, and this is a very interesting rumour.

Newcastle don’t really need a new striker with Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson currently starring on Tyneside, but there is an argument to make that Calvert-Lewin, at his best, would be a huge asset for Eddie Howe’s side.

Don’t just take our word for it though. Calvert-Lewin has also caught the eye of Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer in the past.

Shearer has been impressed

The pundit spoke so highly of Calvert-Lewin after a game against Chelsea a few years ago.

“I was hugely impressed with him today because he absolutely battered the two centre-halves, Zouma and Christensen,” Shearer said on Match of the Day after that game.

“He didn’t give them a moment’s peace. When you’re a forward, if you can’t win the header then make sure the defender doesn’t win it either. He did it all afternoon.

“Big Dunc would have been proud of that because he used to do that as a player. He used to bully centre-halves, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin did that to those two today. Brilliant.”

Been a while

Shearer’s analysis of Calvert-Lewin at the time was spot on. The England striker was incredibly impressive for a period and he could bully defenders with ease.

Unfortunately, it’s been a while since we’ve seen that side of Calvert-Lewin’s game.

Injuries and poor form have hampered his progress, and these days, he looks decidedly average when leading the line for Everton.

Confidence is a factor, as is coaching, and perhaps a move to Newcastle under Eddie Howe is exactly what the Everton star needs.

This could be a move that reignites Calvert-Lewin’s career.
