Pundits Steven Craigan has told BT Sport that he thinks Motherwell duo Ben Heneghan and Louis Moult can make the step up to play for Rangers.

The Gers beat Hearts 2-1 on Saturday afternoon thanks to goals from Joe Garner and Barrie McKay, giving recently-appointed manager Pedro Caixinha a fifth win in eight games.

With just one defeat to his name, it has been a mostly positive start to life at Ibrox for the Portuguese boss, though the 5-1 home defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic has been a major blot on the copy book.

Caixinha needs new signings this summer, and whilst the transfer window isn’t even open yet, Rangers are being linked with a host of new signings – including two players from Scottish Premiership rivals Motherwell.

The Scottish Sun reported last week that Rangers are keen on Motherwell centre back Ben Heneghan, as well as striker Louis Moult; two players plucked from English non-league football.

Centre back Heneghan, 23, had been in the ranks with Everton and Stoke City before starring for Chester, and he has been a mainstay of the Motherwell side since joining the club last summer.

Meanwhile, 25-year-old striker Moult arrived from Wrexham in 2015, and he has smashed 36 goals in 74 appearances for the club, attracting major interest as a result.

Now, pundits Chris Sutton, Stephen Craigan and John Hartson have discussed the rumours on BT Sport, with Craigan suggesting that both players can make the step up – but Hartson thinks Rangers are only targeting players to take second or third place.

“Yes, they could, absolutely,” said Craigan when Sutton asked whether the two players are good enough. “Louis Moult scores goals, and Ben Heneghan is a central defender who will get better as he gets older.”

“It will be interesting to see where Caixinha goes into. Is it the English Premiership, is it League One. Is it the Scottish Premiership? That will be interesting,” added Hartson.
