If Wolves are to sign a striker in January, they should be looking for someone who can step up to the Premier League next season.
Friday night’s scrappy win at Sheffield Wednesday saw Wolverhampton Wanderers momentarily move seven points clear at the top of the Championship table – and 11 ahead of third-placed Bristol City.
As a talented group continues to fulfil its potential as one of the best squads to have played at this level in recent years, it would take a monumental collapse for Wolves to miss out on promotion.
Even if their performance levels were to fall off slightly, it is unlikely that the likes of Bristol City and Cardiff City are capable of making up the ground – themselves enjoying a surprise push.
And so it makes little sense that, according to the Birmingham Mail, Wolves’ striker targets for January include Dwight Gayle and Lewis Grabban.
Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo is seemingly looking to add Championship know-how to the team, but that seems very odd when considering their current position.
Gayle and Grabban have both excelled in the second tier but flattered to deceive in the Premier League, meaning Wolves would be making a short-term investment – one that, given their handy lead, would not be needed anyway.
Wolves are light up front and should recruit a reinforcement, but that should be a player who can sign up knowing that, after a few months at the top of the Championship, Premier League football is around the corner.
Attracting a prolific first division striker to the Championship may not be easy, but then most of Wolves’ transfer business of late has been scarcely believable.
It is important Nuno’s side show ambition this winter – or they may pay the price next season.
