David Brooks is enjoying a breakout season for Sheffield United – and, even after signing a new deal, they must do everything in their power to keep him.

Chris Wilder, the Sheffield United manager, looks on during the pre season friendly match between Sheffield United and Stoke City at Bramall Lane on July 25, 2017 in Sheffield, England.

Sheffield United fans must be pinching themselves as the newly promoted side have taken the Championship by storm this season.

David Brooks’ emergence on the scene has epitomised the Blades’ campaign, too, as the 20-year-old – who had not played in the Football League back in August – has a man-of-the-match display in the Steel City derby to his name – and now a winning goal against Leeds United.

“Brooks, Brooks will tear you apart again,” sang the away supporters in a victory over rivals Leeds on Friday that took Chris Wilder’s side temporarily to the top of the table, with a promotion push now becoming a real possibility.

And the prospect of such a challenge was boosted 10 days before the clash at Elland Road as Brooks signed a new deal at the Sheffield club.

Sheffield United should now be able to hold off interest in their young star going into January but, even with the renewed contract, they must realise their ambitions need to align with Brooks’.

A coolly taken winner this weekend again showed that Brooks has the talent to go all the way to the top.

If Sheffield United want to benefit from his talents and join the Wales international in the Premier League, they may well have to go up this season.

It seems increasingly likely that Brooks will be playing top flight football next term – one way or another.

“Hopefully it’s the first of many,” he told Sky Sports after this goal. That is certainly a thought that Blades supporters should feel no shame in clinging to.
