While Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Andros Townsend, Rolando Aarons must worry for his status in the first team squad.
Townsend starred for the Magpies in 2016, although he could not save them from relegation, and the Mirror claims he is available this summer and of interest to Benitez.
While the report adds that the Newcastle board are currently reluctant to make a move for the England international, Benitez’s interest in a move could represent bad news for Rolando Aarons.
With Matt Ritchie a star man for Newcastle last season and both Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy signing permanent deals this summer, Aarons is arguably fourth in the winger pecking order at St. James’ Park.
That is largely due to fitness concerns, with the 21-year-old failing to complete a full campaign since breaking into the first team four years ago.
If Aarons could be relied upon, meaning Newcastle had four options out wide, Benitez would have no need for Townsend, particularly when the Magpies have other needs.
The manager’s apparent desperation for a deal, regardless of Townsend’s talent, instead suggests Aarons still needs to convince Benitez.
