Newcastle’s survival bid could live or die by their results in January – and a new striker would boost their chances.
The lack of a prolific goal scorer has dogged Newcastle United’s season, as they have become embroiled in a Premier League relegation scrap.
A loan move for Liverpool’s Danny Ings would certainly fix that problem, though, with the Chronicle reporting Rafa Benitez is keen to make such a swoop.
Crucially, the report details the Newcastle manager’s intention to get a deal done early in January – and that could be the key to the Magpies’ survival.
Ings would not arrive in time to face Stoke City on January 1st, but that’s just the first of many key fixtures throughout the month that Newcastle would love to be able to call on the England international for.
The FA Cup tie against Luton Town represents an opportunity to boost morale at the club, before a mammoth clash against bottom club Swansea City on January 13th.
Then comes a daunting trip to Manchester City, but a potential fourth round cup game and the hosting of Burnley on January 31 close out the month.
It could be a key period if Newcastle are to pull clear of danger, and so Ings’ presence in the attack at Swansea and his former club Burnley would represent a huge boost.
Benitez must now hope he is entrusted with the funds to make a deal happen.
