Newcastle should be looking at strengthening their attack rather than spending big money on a top defender.

Newcastle United are interested in the loan signing of Chelsea defender David Luiz, according to the Evening Standard.
The Brazilian has become something of an outcast at Stamford Bridge this season – having starred in a Premier League title win last term – and Rafa Benitez will reportedly look to use his relationship with the defender to get a deal done.
David Luiz would certainly add top-flight quality to a squad that is sorely lacking, but it would be a strange first move of the January transfer window for Newcastle.

The report acknowledges that Newcastle would only be able to afford the former Paris Saint-Germain star’s wages if a takeover deal went through – and Benitez surely has greater priorities on which to expend big money.
Jamaal Lascelles has tightened up the Newcastle defence with his return and their problems instead lie at the other end of the pitch, where Joselu and Dwight Gayle are the side’s top scorers on just three goals apiece.
Therefore, if Benitez has money to spend on a world renowned star this winter, he should be looking at a new striker – or at least a playmaker to create for Gayle.

Lascelles, Florian Lejeune, Ciaran Clark and Chancel Mbemba make up a handy quartet of defenders for a relegation-threatened outfit, unlike their options in the attacking third.
David Luiz would represent a marquee signing for Newcastle but – takeover or not – it does not look like the right move.
