LIV Golf has taken yet another major blow in 2026.
In a season where two of their biggest names, Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed, jumped ship, they lost their Saudi funding and their connection to the Asian Tour, and Bryson DeChambeau is considering leaving, the bad news continues to pile up.
Martin Kaymer of Cleeks GC confirmed that LIV’s season finale, the Team Championship final in Michigan, is 95% likely to be cancelled. It would be the second LIV event not to take place this season after the postponement of LIV Louisiana.
This news should be of particular concern to DeChambeau, whose past comments suggest this event means a lot to him personally.
Bryson DeChambeau’s support of team golf should concern LIV
One of LIV’s major selling points to potential investors is its team format. It’s something that, for better or worse, makes their tour unique, and DeChambeau feels passionately about it.
He’s pitched the idea that Tiger Woods’ TGL team could play his LIV team in the future, and when asked what value LIV Golf brings to the sport, he has repeatedly referenced the team aspect of the tour.
Speaking to Beyond the Clubhouse a week ago, he said, “Is it valuable? Yeah. Are we working to build a product out here at LIV? Hopefully. Everybody thinks it’s going away right away but I don’t know about that.
“I think there is opportunity for team golf. I hope people understand, especially as some of us players have exemptions which are still outstanding.”
And talking before LIV Singapore, DeChambeau said the future of golf could lie in the team format: “I think there’s an opportunity for the world to see the game for what it could be, which is rivalries and teams against teams.”
But by potentially cancelling its team finale, LIV is telling the world that it values its Individual Championship more than its Team Championship. If DeChambeau really does feel this strongly about team golf, then he must be immensely disappointed.
That should be a concern for LIV, as DeChambeau is their biggest star, and out of contract at the end of this season.
