Johnson Wagner has admitted that he expects Bryson DeChambeau to miss the cut at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, as he suggested the biggest problem the LIV Golf star has had at that particular major during his career.
There is enormous pressure on DeChambeau heading into the final major of the 2026 season. Of course, the 32-year-old has missed the cut at The Masters, the PGA Championship, and the US Open this year.
How do you think Jon Rahm will get on at the Scottish Open?
It has been a sobering experience for a player who had previously appeared to have worked out the secret for competing at the four biggest events of the year.
Johnson Wagner doubts Bryson DeChambeau will make the cut at The Open Championship
DeChambeau went into 2026 having finished inside the top 10 in six of his last eight major starts. That run included a second US Open win at Pinehurst in 2024.
The problem is that DeChambeau’s major record since the start of 2024 now reads six top 10s and five missed cuts.

And speaking on CBS Sports, Johnson Wagner suggested that he expects another weekend off for DeChambeau in Southport.
“I was going to mention Bryson because he doesn’t need to win this next major, he needs to make a cut. He’s been terrible. It’s been absolutely atrocious. The only time he’s played well at an Open Championship in recent years is last year, and it was just the last three rounds when the wind died down,” he said.
“He is not built for The Open Championship. I would say there’s a much better chance of him missing the cut at Royal Birkdale than him even just making the cut.”
The surprising fact about Bryson DeChambeau’s Open Championship record
Interestingly, DeChambeau’s record at The Open Championship is, on paper, not actually that much worse than the other three major championships.
It is the only major where he has never registered a top five finish. And it should be noted that on both occasions he finished inside the top 10 at The Open, he only managed to break in during the final round.
Of course, many will remember how well he played just to make the cut at Royal Portrush 12 months ago.
Who do you think will win the Scottish Open?
A number of big names are in the field at The Renaissance Club!
But DeChambeau does have just as many top 10s at The Open as he does at The Masters and at the US Open.
He has also missed three cuts at Augusta National, the PGA Championship, and The Open.
Admittedly, he has made great strides to perform better at The Masters. And few are going to reflect on his lack of top 10s at the US Open given the fact that he has won the event twice.
But some will certainly be very surprised to learn that his Open Championship record does not stand out as being significantly worse.
