Practicing golf in the winter is difficult at the best of times, and nearly impossible when snow is falling.
Balls don’t roll on the green, or anywhere else for that matter, and even if they did, you wouldn’t find your ball anyway. If you’re lucky, you have access to a simulator, but for the rest of us, we’re sitting inside, longing for the day that the sun returns.
But using a drill from two-time US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau, you can get ahead with your golf game with a simple drill.
It’s especially helpful if you’re struggling with chunking or thinning shots, and DeChambeau proved just how effective the drill is immediately.

Bryson DeChambeau’s simple drill for practicing in the snow
All you need for DeChambeau’s drill is a club, snow, and you can add a ball in too.
Speaking on his social media, he explained: “If you have a problem thinning it or chunking it, this is the perfect drill for you.
“Go into your ice, draw a straight line. Once you get the line drawn, I want you to set up the club right on that line, and if you chunk it, which is hitting before the line, that’s no good.
“If you thin it, that’s hitting it after the line, so you don’t wanna do that. What you wanna really do is hit it right on the line, just like that.
“So set the ball up just in front of the line, set it up, and hit it perfect. And that’s how you do it!”
When demonstrating, DeChambeau holed a long chip on his first attempt. Laughing, he said, “I told you it’s that simple! Perfect drill, hit it in the hole every time!”
How to practice Bryson DeChambeau’s drill inside
No snow outside, or you just don’t want to go out in it? Fair enough! Here’s how DeChambeau replicates this drill inside.
He said on his YouTube channel in 2024: “You get a piece of tape, tape it down. Or put a Sharpie line in it if you want to draw on your turf. You can spray paint it, you can do a bunch of different things, but you can put a line down, whatever you designate.
“You’ll see if you’re striking in front of it or not. This is a great way right here to start out. Get your 60°, set your line down so it’s like a starting line. If you chunk it, you’re immediately going to pull up that tape, and if you hit in front of it, you’re not going to hit the tape.
“The goal here is to feel like you fractionally just clip the front edge of that tape and make sure that your divot is in front of that line, and you’re going to see on the astro turf will barely start peeking up, and then there’s a lot of turf coming up, so I know that I’m hitting it after the line.”
So if you’re down in the dumps, not able to work on your golf game, you can use this easy drill!
