Bryson DeChambeau’s Open Championship has been thrown into controversy after his second round.

The two-time US Open winner made a statement in his second round, shooting a 66 to bring himself to just one shot off the lead.

But he lost two of those shots after rules officials penalized DeChambeau for inadvertently improving his lie on the fifth hole. The American was in the rough to the right of the fairway and was seen flattening the grass behind the ball.

DeChambeau is reportedly “distraught” and may not play the weekend at The Open because of this.

Bryson DeChambeau threatens not to play the weekend at The Open

DeChambeau was driven back to the fifth hole by rules officials after his second round and was seen arguing his case to the R&A.

Ewan Murray posted to X that DeChambeau walked past media without confirming if he would play the weekend at The Open.

He was reportedly spotted telling rules officials that he is “not playing tomorrow” during their conversation on the fifth hole.

It would be by far the story of the championship if DeChambeau were to withdraw due to this penalty. DeChambeau was a leading contender to win the Claret Jug after three straight missed cuts in majors this season.

He has the chance to earn those two shots back over the next 36 holes, but he could instead pack his bags and leave the tournament altogether.
