Bryson DeChambeau might be LIV Golfs best hope at the 153rd Open, but the American hasn’t held back in his assessment of Royal Portrush.

The course is widely viewed as one of golf’s best, thanks in part to its natural, historic links character.

Like many players, DeChambeau knows the course well and will be more than prepared for whatever Royal Portrush throws at him.

DeChambeau has been LIV’s most visible contender this year, contending late into both the PGA Championship and the Masters before fading. Still, while the American might fancy his chances in Northern Ireland, he’s given a brutally honest assessment of the course.

Links golf always offers a challenge and it’s true that even the best of the best sometimes struggle to come to terms with it.

DeChambeau is no different and, when mooting his chances for a second major in 2025, he held nothing back in his verdict of the famous links.

“Yeah, I’d say disappointed that I haven’t won one yet. I’ve got to fine tune my game and focus on executing my shots the way I know I can on the golf course. I haven’t been doing that recently. A little bit more due diligence on my side of the coin. Not taking things for granted and focusing on what I can do to give myself the best chance to win at the British Open,” DeChambeau admitted.

Asked for his thoughts on Royal Portrush, he again didn’t hold back in his assessment.

“I played it last time around when Shane won. Yeah, it can be diabolical.

“Driver is key on that golf course in wind conditions, in side wind conditions. It’s going to be a good test of controlling your golf ball, so I’ve got to be in touch with my game. I’ve got to have better feel.”

What happened in Bryson DeChambeau’s last time at Royal Portrush

The last time DeChambeau played at Royal Portrush was in 2019, the year Shane Lowry won the tournament. On that occasion, DeChambeau didn’t fare quite as well.

The American shot rounds of 74 and 73 to finish five over par, missing the cut and the weekend entirely.

Lowry won the event at -15, six strokes ahead of Tommy Fleetwood, in one of the most dominant major performances in recent memory.

Six years on, DeChambeau will be keen to avenge that result – and if he’s in contention approaching the weekend, fans can expect fireworks.
