Geoff Cameron could be the victim of Bruno Martins Indi’s reported move to Stoke City as the new man looks to take up a first team place.
Bruno Martins Indi is closing in on a return to Stoke City, where he was on loan last season, after the club agreed a deal with Porto, according to De Telegraaf.
The Netherlands defender played in 35 of Stoke’s 38 Premier League games last term and is now set to be restored to a back-line boosted by Kurt Zouma’s loan arrival.
Mark Hughes has opted for a three-man defence in pre-season, with Zouma on the right and captain Ryan Shawcross in the middle – a system that Martins Indi knows well from international level.
However, while Stoke fans will be excited by the prospect of Martins Indi returning to the club, the move could spell bad news for Geoff Cameron.
The United States international has adapted to the left-sided role in the back three in recent weeks, but he would surely be the victim of Martins Indi’s return.
De Telegraaf‘s report on the move claims that Martins Indi preferred the switch to Stoke ahead of Premier League rivals Crystal Palace as he has an established place in the side.
With Zouma boasting greater pedigree than his defensive team-mates and Shawcross still the club’s captain, Martins Indi would most likely come in on the left in Cameron’s place.
The former Houston Dynamo man’s versatility often counts in his favour, but a defensive position, where he plays for his country and has trained during pre-season, now looks to be off the table, and he could have to settle for a back-up role if he wants to stay at Stoke this season.
