Bruno Guimaraes has claimed that Newcastle United could qualify for Europe at the end of next season if they strengthen well this summer.

In an interview with Globo Esporte, the Brazilian international revealed that Eddie Howe’s side have the potential to return to continental football if the club get their spending right once again in the upcoming transfer window.

Guimaraes has so far been Newcastle’s most expensive signing under the new PIF ownership of the club, with the Toon also bringing in the likes of Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Matt Targett in what was an impressive January window of spending.

The result of all these new signings has seen Newcastle fly up the table away from safety, and for Guimaraes, the Magpies could go another huge step forward next season if the club continue to sign smartly this summer.

The midfielder said: “The fans are passionate about the team, it’s different. We strengthened well. Next season I believe we will strengthen very well to claim, who knows, a spot in the Champions League, in the Europa League. It’s possible.

Guimaraes added; “From now on, it’s a team to compete to be the Premier League champions. I believe a lot in the project and I hope that everything works out as it was passed on to me.”

Reaching Europe and then eventually winning the title is the long-term goal for Newcastle, and based on the success of Manchester City and the quality of player the club is already attracting in Guimaraes, this target seems more than achievable.

However, qualifying for Europe could be too steep of an objective for Newcastle for now despite Guimaraes’s enthusiasm. After all, a top-six finish, let alone a top-four one, is one of the hardest things a Premier League club beyond the big six can achieve, and for the Toon, it will take time before they can break into the pack that dominate the top of the table.
