Rangers are reportedly set to lose defender Bruno Alves.

Portugal's defender Bruno Alves arrives at the Zhukovsky airport, about 40 km southeast of Moscow, on July 1, 2018, as Portugal's team departs following their loss the previous day to...

Rangers appear to be on the verge of allowing Bruno Alves to leave the club, with Sky Sports reporting that he is undergoing a medical with Parma.

Parma’s promotion back to Serie A means they are looking for new signings, and they appear to be keen on handing the former Cagliari centre back a return to Italy.

Alves, 36, was a key signing for Pedro Caixinha last summer, but he struggled to impress last season and is now being offloaded as Steven Gerrard continues to re-tool his defence.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic have arrived, but with Fabio Cardoso also seemingly primed for the exit, Alves’ imminent exit may leave Rangers a centre back short.

With Katic still young and fairly inexperienced, another veteran defender may be needed to fill Alves’ role – and returning to pursue Gareth McAuley may be one avenue Gerrard looks to.

The Daily Record reported last month that Gerrard was considering bringing McAuley to Ibrox on a free transfer, with the veteran centre back available having been released by West Bromwich Albion.

The Northern Ireland international turns 39 later this year and would surely only be cover for Rangers, but adding an experienced head on a free transfer to replace Alves may be a smart move.

McAuley may be heading into his final season as a pro, but if Gerrard was keen last month, Alves’ Parma move may just free up the space for McAuley to come in and offer cover behind Goldson and Katic.
