According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United are interested in signing Peterborough United winger Siriki Dembele.
It’s claimed that boss Steve Bruce was spotted watching Crewe Alexandra’s 2-0 win over Peterborough on Saturday afternoon.
Some wondered just why Bruce and his son Alex were at the game, but it’s now suggested that Dembele was the player on his radar.
The 24-year-old attacker can play up front or out wide, and has been in superb form this season with five goals and four assists in 10 League One games.
Born in London but able to play for Scotland and the Ivory Coast, Dembele isn’t a big name yet; you could even argue that his younger brother Karamoko at Celtic is a bigger name!
Dembele may remind some fans of a poor man’s Allan Saint-Maximin; he’s small, has blistering pace and is a superb dribbler, with his trickery making League One defenders looking foolish.
Newcastle may now look to swoop for Dembele, who is out of contract at the end of the season, and fans may be interested in Darren Ferguson’s take.
The Peterborough boss called Dembele ‘absolutely brilliant’ last month, whilst he praised his ‘destructive’ ability earlier this year.
That’s huge praise for Dembele, who now looks to be too good for League One – and could be a diamond in the rough for Newcastle if they do press ahead with a January move.
