Steve Bruce has told talkSPORT (broadcast 25/10/16) that turning around Aston Villa’s fortunes and getting them promoted is the biggest challenge he has faced in his managerial career.

The former Hull City manager took over the reins at Villa Park after a stuttering start from Roberto Di Matteo saw the Italian get the sack. Bruce is now the man tasked with getting Villa back to the Premier League, having achieved four promotions from the Championship already in his career. However, the 55-year-old has conceded that it will not be easy, believing it would top all of his other promotions.

“This [getting Aston Villa promoted] would be the biggest one though, if I can get this up and back and running,” Bruce told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“This is probably, arguably the biggest challenge and biggest club I’ve waited for for 20 years in management.”

In his short time in charge, Bruce has collected seven points from a possible nine, as well as ending their win-less streak away from home with a 2-1 victory over Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

Bruce is a master when it comes to getting teams out of the Championship and into the Premier League, doing so twice with rivals Birmingham City, as well as two times with his former club Hull, with his most recent promotion coming last season in the playoff final against Sheffield Wednesday.

Getting Villa back in the promotion picture will be a huge task for Bruce, especially with the quality in the division this season, but he will be confident that his players can climb up the table.
