Steve Bruce has confirmed that he’s trying to get Newcastle United player Henri Saivet fixed up with a new club soon.
The former Bordeaux star has returned to the North East for pre-season training, but the Magpies boss doesn’t seem to have any long-term plan for him.
Saivet joined Newcastle in 2016 for £5 million but has only ever managed to make five Premier League appearances.
Bruce told The Chronicle: “He is a really good professional. But I think it is fair to say that we need to go and find him a club. He’s not played for a long, long time for this club.
“I feel for the lad because it’s not his fault, unfortunately. He trains everyday and he’s a really good pro.”
Removing Saivet – who has one year left on his five-year contract – might help Newcastle in the transfer market.
The Frenchman is earning some £35,000 per week, which equates almost £2 million per year in terms of salary.
It isn’t a huge amount of money for Newcastle to free up, but every little helps and there’s no sense in paying that to a player who contributes absolutely nothing to the cause, even if it’s through no fault of his own.
As Bruce said, Saivet didn’t sign himself – Steve McClaren did – and it’s unfortunate that he’s been unable to have a big impact.
Saivet has had three different loan spells away from St James’s Park – first Saint-Etienne, then Turkish pair Sivasspor and Burssaspor.
