Aston Villa gem Cameron Archer secured his loan transfer to Middlesbrough after broken promises by Unai Emery. The youngster will spend the rest of this season at the Riverside.

That is according to Birmingham Live, which reports Emery frustrated Archer with his lack of game time offered. The 21-year-old was already irritated before the Spaniard took charge in November, as well. Steven Gerrard, likewise, annoyed the striker by restricting his games.

Emery promised Archer upon succeeding Gerrard in charge that he would give the England U21 attacker a fair shot. But the Walsall-born talent headed to Teesside having only played 51 first-team minutes all season. He also only played seven of those minutes under Emery.

Archer played in one Carabao Cup tie for eight minutes and four Premier League games for 27 minutes under Gerrard. He also watched a further five top-flight fixtures on the bench. While Emery’s arrival saw the striker make a seven-minute cameo for his only appearance.

Moving to Middlesbrough in a short-term loan transfer has already seen Archer shatter his 2022/23 minute tally for Aston Villa. Michael Carrick has fielded the forward in four games for a combined 148 minutes. Archer also registered an assist in his first start last Saturday.

Emery’s broken Aston Villa promises saw Archer eye his Middlesbrough loan transfer

Neither Gerrard nor Emery saw Archer influence a goal during their tenures at Aston Villa this season. Emery also saw the arrival of Jhon Duran from Chicago Fire as his like-for-like replacement for Danny Ings. So, the Spaniard saw no issue with letting Archer go on loan.

Aston Villa did not agree to any recall clauses with Middlesbrough in the terms of Archer’s loan transfer. So, he will spend the rest of the term at the Riverside in Carrick’s squad. The Boro boss has also already been full of praise for what the attacker has shown under him.

“He’s been terrific,” Carrick said, via quotes by The Northern Echo, after Archer delivered an impressive cameo against Brighton & Hove Albion in Middlesbrough’s 5-1 FA Cup exit.

“He’s trained really well since he came in and the longer he’s in here, getting comfortable, getting sharper and getting to know the boys and the boys getting to know him – what he likes, what he’s good at – the more he will benefit.”
