Newcastle United are now 11 games without a victory in all competitions after losing to Leeds United on Tuesday night.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side picked up a 2-1 win away to the Magpies, whose last victory came against West Bromwich Albion way back on December 12.
Newcastle fashioned some good goalscoring chances and if not for Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who produced a fine point-blank stop to keep out Jonjo Shelvey, the hosts might’ve won a point on another day.
And it seems like even Bielsa himself has agreed that the St James’s Park club were unlucky, after opposite number Steve Bruce revealed at full-time what the Argentine said to him.
He told Match of the Day: “We had 20-odd shots, we hit the bar and we were unfortunate we didn’t score more but we have to go back again tomorrow and get ready for the weekend. In broken English, he [Bielsa] was complimentary about my team. He thought we deserved more – but of course I would agree with him.”
It was certainly better from Newcastle, but still nowhere near good enough and they need to arrest this form as quick as possible.
Bruce’s side are only seven points above the relegation zone, but 18th-placed Brighton have two games in hand and this is becoming a lot more nervy for United than it could and probably should be.
As for Leeds, last night’s victory propelled them up to 12th in the table and Bielsa’s troops visit title-chasing Leicester City on Sunday afternoon.
