Bristol Rovers manager Darrell Clarke
The president of Bristol Rovers has been commenting on the club’s success under manager Darrell Clarke, and the approach made for his services by Leeds United last year.
When it became clear that Leeds chairman Massimo Cellino had decided Steve Evans’ time at Elland Road was coming to an end last season the club were linked with plenty of names.
Karl Robinson, Ivan Juric, Beppe Iachini and John Sheridan were all linked. As was Bristol Rovers manager Clarke.
He had built an impressive reputation for his work with the Pirates but in the end he signed a new deal at the Memorial Stadium in May. Speaking about the interest from Leeds Wael al-Qadi had this to say about his manager to the Bristol Post:
“Darrell, his staff and the players done an amazing job to get promotion.
“They have all done even better to still be in the mix for a play-off place in a really tough League One this season.
“It was no surprise when Leeds United approached us to speak to him last season. We didn’t want to stand in his way but, at the same time, we were desperate for him to stay.
“Once he decided to sign a new contract we asked Darrell what he needed to help him do his job.”

In the end Leeds ended up appointing Garry Monk. It has certainly been a deal that has worked out for the club.
Leeds are fighting for promotion from the Championship after some brilliant form under their new manager and fans will be pleased, in hindsight, that Clarke decided to stick around in the West Country.
