The Robins nicked a 1-0 victory over fellow Championship strugglers Wigan.

Looking at recent results, it could be argued that Bristol City aren’t in the worst run of form.

Make no mistake, however – their 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Wigan at the weekend was vital, both mentally and mathematically.

Draws against Derby and Newcastle in recent times were marred by the Robins’ costly throwing away of a lead, and even draws against Burton and Norwich have been met by little enthusiasm by the fans, many of whom are clamouring for manager Lee Johnson to be sacked.

Indeed, the recent run of results has not been enough for assistant head coach John Pemberton to keep his job, with head of scouting Des Taylor also departing the club.

City’s performance against Wigan was hardly vintage – with only two shots on target, despite firing 14 shots on goal, there was certainly a lack of quality in front of goal.

Aden Flint’s stabbed winner in the 88th minute provided many things City fans hadn’t felt in a while – luck, desire and a hard-fought clean sheet.

Whether the Robins go on to beat the drop remains to be seen, but the thrill of a last-minute victory will only serve to help the dwindling team spirit that surrounds Ashton Gate.
