Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has launched a stunning attack on Aston Villa following the meeting between the two sides on Monday, as reported in the Birmingham Mail.

The Robins have been superb this season, but came unstuck on New Years Day as they were hammered 5-0 at Villa Park by Steve Bruce’s side.

Scott Hogan’s superb header from an Albert Adomah cross handed Villa the lead, before Robert Snodgrass bagged two goals – one either side of the break – to put Villa 3-0 up.

Birkir Bjarnason and Conor Hourihane both found the net in the second period to make the score 5-0, handing Villa a huge win over Johnson’s men.

The result means that Villa are now just three points shy of Bristol City in the Championship table, and have closed the gap to the automatic promotion spots to just five points too.

Whilst Villa are buoyant, Bristol City have been left reeling by such a heavy defeat, and manager Johnson hasn’t reacted well.

Johnson has told the Birmingham Mail that he felt Villa was a game too far for the Robins, and they simply couldn’t compete on the day.

Johnson then added a stunning attack on Villa fans and manager Bruce, reminding Villa that Bristol City are still above them in the table, and they must use their mocking as ammunition.

“This was a game too far for us. You try and run two half marathons in two days, with all the speed, tempo, guile, skill and environment,” said Johnson. “It was interesting to hear the Villa fans mocking us, Bruce flicking the ball all over the gaffe – we’re still three points above them. Let’s see where we are at the end. We’ve got to use that as ammunition,” he added.
