Aston Villa recently completed a big money move to sign Bristol City striker Jonathan Kodjia.

Tony Xia splashed out what could be an eventual fee in the region of £15 million to bring in the striker to help Villa in their hunt for Premier League football once again.

It came after Bristol City had previously declared Kodjia as not for sale.

However, the majority shareholder at Bristol City has now explained why he had to sell the Ivory Coast international. Simply put, to the Bristol Post, Steve Lansdown was caught by surprise:

“We didn’t have any intention of selling Jonathan when I made that statement.

“I have been in football long enough to know better considering how quickly circumstances and situations can change in football.

“I didn’t think a Championship side would match our valuation and that caught me out. I should have known better and I apologise to the supporters if they think that I have misled them.”

Aston Villa’s spending in the Championship has certainly left some teams scrambling to keep up.

The club have spent big to bring in players such as James Chester, Mile Jedinak, Aaron Tshibola and Ross McCormack to the club this summer and Kodjia now joins that crew.

Villa will no doubt be hoping he can help turn around their fortunes.

The club may have invested heavily over the summer and made big changes behind the scenes but they have struggled to get results in the Championship so far this season and are currently 16th in the table after five games.
