Robins fans have taken to social media to express their delight at the signing of Gary O’Neil on a free transfer.
Gary O’Neil has signed a two-year deal with Bristol City
Thursday brought news that Gary O’Neil had completed his move to Championship side Bristol City, much to the delight of fans at Ashton Gate, many of whom took to social media to welcome the 33-year-old to the club.
The former West Ham man’s experience and knowledge, combined with the fact that Norwich City reportedly wanted to keep him as part of a charge for promotion back to the Premier League, have been the most encouraging points for Robins fans, who will be hoping to see some progress from their side this season after a disappointing 18th-place finish last term.
Bristol City manager Lee Johnson will be hoping his side can improve on last season’s Championship campaign
Having spent most of his career in the top two divisions of English football, O’Neil has signed a two-year deal at the club, with many fans hoping he can bring a level of leadership that will rival that of Wade Elliott, who captained City to a League One title and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy double in 2015, while also playing a pivotal role in helping to develop the club’s young players.
There have been some suggestions that O’Neil may view his time in the south-west as the chance for one last payday, but the overall reaction to his arrival has been positive.
