Bristol City chief operating officer Mark Ashton has explained to The Bristol Post the process of Luke Ayling’s transfer to Leeds United last month.

Championship club Leeds signed Ayling from City in the summer transfer window.

According to The Bristol Post, the West Yorkshire outfit had to pay a transfer fee in the region of £750,000 in order to secure the services of the 25-year-old, who can play as a defender or as a defensive midfielder.

City COO Ashton has explained the process of selling the former Arsenal prospect to Championship rivals Leeds.

Ashton has revealed that along with Leeds, two other clubs were interested in the right-back, and has explained out how he made sure that all three teams were trying to outbid each other.

“Once we knew there was a good chance of (Adam) Matthews coming, we had to think about what we did with Luke Ayling,” Ashton told The Bristol Post.

“It was obvious that he was not going to get so much game time. If that was the case, then it was probably better that we let him go.

“At the same time as I’m trying to do a deal for Matthews, I’m positioning Luke Ayling to go out. I had three clubs that were interested in Luke Ayling’s services. I then set a value on Luke Ayling and left the three clubs to fight it out.”

Ayling is a decent right-back and has already been involved in the Championship with Leeds this season.

The 25-year-old former Yeovil Town defender has featured in five league matches for the West Yorkshire outfit so far this campaign.

Leeds will take on Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road in the Championship on Tuesday evening.
