Robins first-team coach John Pemberton believes Ayling, who left the club for Elland Road this summer, should be warmly welcomed back to Ashton Gate.

Wednesday night’s clash between Bristol City and Leeds United has a small sub-plot in the form of the transfer of defender Luke Ayling this summer, and Robins first-team coach John Pemberton has called on the home fans to welcome their former star back with open arms, speaking to the club’s website.

Ayling left Ashton Gate for Elland Road this summer after establishing himself as one of City’s key stars in the side which won promotion from League One and secured Championship survival.

His move did not go down well with many City fans, but Pemberton has insisted that the 25-year-old deserves a warm reception rather than a hostile one in recognition of how well he served the club before his exit.

Pemberton told bcfc.co.uk: “Bill [Ayling’s nickname] was great for us, on and off the pitch. He was always smiling, he’s a great lad and I do miss him around the place.

“He was a big part of a successful period for the club. It was the right time for him and the club when he joined Leeds. He’s got a new challenge now.

“I hope he gets a good reception and knowing the Bristol City fans like I do, I‘m sure they will give him a warm welcome on his return.”

Ayling is likely to start at the home of his former side, having already established himself as an important player under Garry Monk since his move.

The defender has started all eight Championship games for the Whites since his move, with the only league fixture he has missed for the club being on the opening day of the season before his switch, in which he played the full 90 minutes for Bristol City.
