Everton midfielder Joe Williams could have been at Bristol City, if it wasn’t for injury.

Lee Johnson, manager of Bristol City looks on before the Sky Bet Championship match between Fulham and Bristol City at Craven Cottage on October 31, 2017 in London, England.

Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has told the Bristol Post that he would have liked to have signed Everton midfielder Joe Williams in January, if he’d been available.

Bristol City were keen to poach Williams from Bolton Wanderers, where the Everton midfielder was due to spend the season on loan at.

However, Williams picked up an injury, which scuppered any deal between the Robins and Everton.

“Well obviously Joe Williams is a good young player that plays for Everton,” Johnson admitted.

“If he was available at that point then we would have had an interest.

“But he was at Bolton anyway and at that point he got an injury. In fact, I think he’s still injured now if I’m right but I’m not sure.

“But yeah I like Joe Williams. He’s a good player. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that he would have come in and jumped ahead of anybody that we’ve got.”

Joe Williams of Everton holds off Matty Virtue of Liverpool during the Premier League 2 match between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park on May 8, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

Whether Bristol City will return for Williams in the summer remains to be seen.

Everton could be open to selling the youngster, even though he has impressed at Championship level.

The 22-year-old is reaching an age where he needs to start playing regularly, and Marco Silva may not be able to offer him that back at Goodison Park.

Everton are stacked for options in midfield, with more senior players ahead of Williams in the pecking order right now.

And the Toffees could be open to discussing terms with Bristol City, if Johnson does revive his side’s interest at the end of the season.

Joe Williams arrives before the Premier League match between Swansea City and Everton at the Liberty Stadium on May 6, 2017 in Swansea, Wales.
