Leeds attacker Pablo Hernandez was fouled in the lead up to the winner, much to the frustration of away fans.
Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan, speaking to BBC Radio Leeds as a summariser, gave his view on the result.
He said: “They got themselves in great areas but couldn’t do anything with it. We just weren’t clinical enough.
“The Hernandez one was quite infuriating to Garry Monk, it looked like a foul.
“It was not a step backwards, they played relatively well this evening. They responded well, very positive.”
Leeds had looked comfortable in the first half, but were taken out of their stride by an injury to key defender Pontus Jansson, on loan from Torino.
He picked up what appeared to be a hamstring injury, and was replaced by Liam Cooper.
Head coach Garry Monk was sent to the stands in the 88th minute as his temper frayed after a disagreement with the officials.
Leeds had five minutes of injury time to equalise, but were unable to make their pressure count.
