Aston Villa are said to be chasing the signature of Robert Huth to replace John Terry.

If Aston Villa do sign Robert Huth on a free transfer, as the Birmingham Mail, it would have to be considered a major downgrade on John Terry.

Terry has left Villa after Steve Bruce’s side failed to earn promotion, and they are now assessing their options ahead of next campaign.

Huth is reportedly on their wishlist, following his release from Leicester City, but the 33-year-old would hardly be the most inspiring of signings.

Villa were always going to struggle finding a replacement for Terry within their wage structure, but bringing in Huth would be a significant loss of quality.

The German defender has shown signs of age recently, and struggled badly with injury next campaign.

He would arrive at Villa with a lack of match sharpness, and question marks over his fitness levels over his head.

Huth does boast a high level of experience, but Villa may be better off going for a player who has years ahead of him, rather than adding another ageing veteran to their squad.

And Bruce’s side would have to be considered to making a downgrade, if they did bring in Huth as Terry’s replacement.
