Newcastle United hero Jonas Gutierrez has shared his thoughts on the Saudi-led takeover of the North-East outfit on Twitter, sparking some fans to react on social media.
A consortium involving Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers purchased the Toon on Thursday. Mike Ashley agreed to sell the St James’ Park side for £305m after the Premier League approved the buyout.
Gutierrez spent seven-years on the books at Newcastle between 2008 and 2015, but left the club in acrimonious circumstances. The Argentine hit out at Ashley on Twitter following his final game in black-and-white, suggesting the Sports Direct tycoon had disregarded him.
Gutierrez returned from battling testicular cancer to save Newcastle from relegation on the final day of the 2014/15 season. He provided an assist before scoring to seal a vital 2-0 win over West Ham. And soon let his true feelings of Ashley be known, posting on social media:
“Two things I learnt from my illness, how you can support a player (Newcastle fans), and how you leave a player alone (Newcastle owner).”
Gutierrez, who won a disability discrimination claim against Newcastle, has now given his thoughts on the takeover of United. With the Argentine looking forward to a bright future.
“We are United, the best in our new era. Once a Geordie, always a Geordie,” he wrote.
