Some Liverpool fans on Twitter are in favour of Mark Lawrenson’s latest transfer suggestion.
The Reds legend told The Argus that his former club should try to re-sign Conor Coady in January.
Liverpool are without influential defender Virgil van Dijk until next season after his injury by Everton’s Jordan Pickford last week.
Fabinho has acquitted himself well in the two matches that he’s covered for Van Dijk since, but Jurgen Klopp could and probably should look to sign a recognised central defender when the transfer window re-opens.
Coady began his career at Liverpool, spending nine years on his local club’s books before being sold to Huddersfield Town in 2014.
But the 27-year-old is a bonafide Premier League star with Wolverhampton Wanderers these days and some fans of the Anfield club have backed Lawrenson’s suggestion:
The St Helens-born defender has 83 Premier League appearances under his belt.
And although he is Liverpool born and bred, and clearly a fine player, we’re talking about the champions here.
Relative to the amount of centre-backs around the world, only a tiny percentage are good enough to play for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
And Van Dijk is arguably the best in the business by virtue of the fact he came second in the Ballon d’Or stakes behind Lionel Messi last season.
Coady is a very accomplished central defender but being good enough to cover Van Dijk is an entirely different question.
