We went into Sunday’s Line of Duty finale not having a clue what to expect, but one thing we didn’t anticipate was an football reference that left us wondering, is H an Aston Villa fan?

Warning, this article will contain spoilers for Sunday’s finale of Line of Duty. You’ve been warned.

Indeed, as the infamous ‘H’ was unmasked as the bumbling Brummie DSI Ian Buckells, many football fans noticed that there was a cheeky reference to Aston Villa in the dialogue.

The dodgy detective was laundering funds through an seedy offshore business known as ‘Holte End Holdings’ an obvious nod to the home end at Villa Park.

So, is Line of Duty’s ‘H’ an Aston Villa fan? The company name would certainly suggest so.

The character is quite clearly from Birmingham, and now we know he’s a Villan rather than a Bluenose.

Nigel Boyle, who plays Buckells in the series, is also a big Villa supporter, with his Twitter username even being @VillaBoycey.

Millions tuned into the BBC One drama at 9PM on Sunday, and while many were left underwhelmed by the finale, Villa fans were amused to hear their team get a shoutout on the biggest TV event of the year.

Here’s what Aston Villa supporters have been saying about the reference in the Line of Duty finale…
