Some Arsenal fans think they have spotted a transfer hint, amid Mohamed Elneny speculation.
Fotomac in Turkey have reported that Arsenal have agreed to terminate Elneny’s contract in North London come January.
The Egypt international isn’t having a very prolific season at the Emirates Stadium this time around and selling – or even releasing – makes a lot of sense.
But some Gunners fans think that if Edu and Mikel Arteta are willing to let him leave for free, it’s because they have a signing in mind to replace him.
Here’s how they’re reacting on Twitter to the Elneny report:
Possible?
Honestly, this is not a ridiculous shout by any means.
With Granit Xhaka still out injured and Thomas Partey heading to the Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana in late December, Arsenal are probably going to need additional support in midfield.
Albert Sambi Lokonga is too inexperienced to carry Arteta’s midfield, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who has impressed in that role, is a full-back by trade.
Even if Elneny wasn’t leaving the Emirates, bolstering this position might be top priority for Arsenal this winter anyway.
But in light of the speculation that the former Basel star is off, well doubling down and signing a replacement makes perfect sense.
