Thomas Robert has done his chances of a summer move to Celtic no harm at all with Aidrie boss Ian Murray admitting he won’t stand in the striker’s way should a dream move to Glasgow become reality, speaking to the Daily Record.

Airdrie supporters always knew Robert wouldn’t stick around for long.

The 20-year-old raised plenty of eyebrows when he swapped Ligue 1 outfit Montpellier for the third tier of Scottish football last summer.

But, following one hugely impressive season at the Excelsior Stadium, Robert looks set to be rewarded with a chance to join one of the biggest clubs in Britain – albeit a side in transition after losing the crown they had worn with pride for the past nine years.

Speaking to the Daily Record in January, Robert admitted joining a club such as Celtic would be a “dream”.

So when the Hoops offered him a chance to impress on trial last month, it must have been one of those ‘pinch me’ moments for a striker who may soon be tasked with filling an Odsonne Edouard-shaped void in a much-changed Celtic side.

“I can provide clarity on Thomas being in with Celtic and training with them,” Murray explains.

“It’s brilliant for him personally and brilliant for the club because it shows we are doing something right.

“It was a no-brainer to let him go on trial with Celtic. It was a chance for Thomas to showcase himself and train with top-level players and coaches.”

Murray adds that, if Celtic decide to offer Robert a contract, Aidrie won’t deny him the opportunity to put pen to paper with the Glasgow giants.

“We are not going to stand in a player’s way or beg them to stay. We will always be honest with our players, give them the chance to play – but they have to take it.”
