Karl Darlow came into the side following an injury to Rob Elliot, having previously failed to impress when handed a chance ahead of Newcastle’s number one.
Darlow conceded poor goals against both Leicester City and Everton, costing the Magpies at least a pair of points.
But the former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper was much improved against Brighton as he kept a clean sheet with relative ease, dealing with everything that came his way.
While Brighton’s play often lacked invention and Darlow was rarely asked to make anything more than ordinary stops, the keeper was previously making crucial mistakes from those very basic shots.
Newcastle were left disappointed by their lack of punch in attack, but the defence looked solid and Darlow will be delighted to have played a part in that.
The 27-year-old will now hope for further opportunities to show he is the solid stopper he looked to be last season in the Championship, rather than the flappy liability his brief Premier League performances have suggested.
