HITC Sport understands that the Seagulls do not want to sell.

Championship leaders Brighton & Hove Albion have rejected a bid from rivals Aston Villa for midfielder Dale Stephens, HITC Sport understands.

The 27-year-old is out of contract in the summer and has shunned Brighton’s offers of a new deal, as they have not met his demands.

Over the past 12 months Brighton have fended off numerous bids for the player, with Aston Villa being long-term admirers of Stephens – who has again been a key part of Chris Hughton’s side this season.

Now HITC Sport understands that Villa have made a new approach for the player worth £4million, but again Brighton have shunned it.

HITC Sport has been told that Brighton feel that they could persuade Stephens to sign a new deal if they get promoted, and will therefore take a risk on him leaving the club on a free transfer in the summer.

Villa boss Steve Bruce wants to bolster his squad ahead of a push for a play-off place in the second half of the campaign and Stephens is one of his top targets, so he could yet make a second offer.
