Brighton eye swoop for Arsenal & Man City target Mykola Matviyenko

Brighton & Hove Albion will reportedly look to sign Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matviyenko in January, with the Ukrainian international also wanted by the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.

According to Sky Sports News, Roberto De Zerbi is eager to bring in new players in the winter market as the Seagulls look to build from their seventh-place standing heading into the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And the Italian manager has seemingly set his sights on one of his former players in Matviyenko.

This isn’t the first time Brighton have been linked with Matviyenko, with the Atheltic previously reporting that the south coast Premier League side will have to pay £17m to sign the 22-year-old defender, with the report stating that Arsenal and City are also keeping tabs on the youngster.

One of Shakhtar’s star players this season, Matviyenko is expected to leave the Ukrainian giants in January should a major offer come in for the centre-back. And Brighton could be the perfect destination for the youngster given that a former manager in De Zerbi is now at the helm.

Indeed, whilst interest from Arsenal and City is flattering, Matviyenko would be making a great choice on deciding to sign for Brighton, with the Seagulls a proven club for foreign talents to establish themselves at in the Premier League before moving on to bigger and better things.

And Matviyenko could do just that, with the defender already playing at a UEFA Champions League level. Meaning that the centre-back joining Brighton would be a massive coup for De Zerbi and his plans to take the Seagulls to the next level.

Brighton can make huge statement by signing Matviyenko

Many pundits and neutrals expected Brighton to drop down the Premier League following Graham Potter’s departure to Chelsea. However, the Seagulls have once again defied expectations as De Zerbi’s side sit in a European spot. And signing Matviyenko would be another huge statement from the south coast club.

After all, with Arsenal and City chasing the defender, Brighton winning the race for Matviyenko would be an incredible achievement for the Seagulls, with the move also having the potential to take De Zerbi and his promising squad to a new level that could result in a continental finish.
