Brighton owner Tony Bloom has addressed the club’s big summer spending spree.

The Seagulls have undergone plenty of changes over the summer. A new manager was appointed in Fabian Hurzeler with plenty of new signings joining him.

After a successful recent few seasons, the club now has the opportunity to push forward in the Premier League once more.

In the last campaign, Brighton suffered a bit of a drop-off, but this can be attributed to their Europa League campaign.

Now, after all of their success, owner Bloom decided to finally splash the cash this summer. However, it may have come at a cost.

Brighton summer spending spree ‘not going to happen next season’

Brighton spent plenty of money throughout the summer window. The Seagulls brought in big names such as Georginio Rutter and Matt O’Riley to help incoming manager Hurzeler.

As a result, Brighton had the highest net spend in the Premier League at £151.5 million

Looking back on the window, owner Bloom insists that the club cannot repeat this type of expenditure in the next couple of windows.

He told the Albion Unlimited Podcast: “At the start of the window, we knew there was going to be quite a few incomings and changes. We probably didn’t envisage quite as much, but I think the circumstances have allowed for this. Some of the players who perhaps weren’t available to us in the past became available.

“In the past two or three years, we may have lost some key players and not been able to replace them straight away, but this season we’ve managed to bring in lots of first-team players and invested in young players.

“We probably won’t see something like this in the next two or three windows. If we lose key players in the future, hopefully, we will have younger players coming through who have a great chance of making the first team.”

Understandable why Brighton’s summer spending spree won’t happen next summer

Over recent years, Brighton has prided itself on being a stable club due to its clever transfers throughout the summer.

Players such as Moisés Caicedo and Marc Cucurella were brought for pennies before the Seagulls sold them for a big fee.

While it is great to see the club spend loads of money for once, it is not sustainable long term. The fact that Brighton had the highest net spend in the league proves this.

Hopefully, over the season, the new signings prove why so much money was spent on them, and the club can make another push for the Europa League once more.
