Everton hero Peter Reid has taken to Twitter after the Toffees’ Under-23 side beat Southampton 2-0 at Goodison Park on Monday evening.

Ronald Koeman’s first team weren’t in action over the weekend, but their youngsters took on Southampton on Monday in a Premier League 2 clash.

David Unsworth’s side went into the game top of the table, and extended their lead to six points, as Liam Walsh and Kieran Dowell struck in each half to give Everton a 2-0 lead.

The Everton side consisted of a number of notable youngsters, such as Matthew Pennington, Jonjoe Kenny, Courtney Duffus and Joe Williams as well as goalscorers Walsh and Dowell, with David Henen and Bassala Sambou coming off the bench.

First-team boss Koeman has handed first-team football to youngsters such as Mason Holgate, Tom Davies, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and new signing Ademola Lookman, and with more youngsters coming through, Everton look to have a bright future.

Koeman may have been criticised by Southampton fans for not blooding promising talents, but the Dutchman may have no other choice at Goodison Park, as Everton’s Under-23’s are impressing so much this season.
