Wolves looked to have taken a big risk when they let Nouha Dicko leave to join Championship rivals Hull City in the summer.
Bright Enobakhare has had to wait a while to see his name up in lights at Molineux. The 19-year-old striker, who earned a professional contract with Wolves in 2015, scored his first senior goal in two years to see off Bristol Rovers in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
Wolves were far from their best as a much-changed side struggled against their League One opposition before the Nigerian-born hitman struck the only goal of the game in the 98th minute.
Much has been made about the perceived lack of forward depth at Wolves’ disposal, with summer signing Leo Bonatini the only proven senior centre-forward on the club’s books.
Therefore, Enobakhare has offered a timely reminder of his potential to inspire the Midlands club to the fourth round of the League Cup for the first time since 2011.
The teenager has been a regular in the Championship this season, starting five games so far for Nuno Espirito Santo’s high-flying side, but Wednesday was arguably the first-time Enobakhare has really put his name forward as a player capable of providing a much needed goal threat.
As such, the decision to sell Nouha Dicko to Championship rivals Hull City in the summer may be justified after all. While Dicko only scored three league goals last season, and has struggled badly with injuries recently, the club’s decision to let him go without seemingly signing a replacement was seen as a risk in some quarters.
Yet, if Enobakhare can add goals to his game on a more regular basis, few will be questioning Dicko’s departure.
