Brian Deane has urged Leeds United manager Thomas Christiansen to sign a new striker after a disappointing home defeat to Sheffield United on Friday night.

The Yorkshire giants failed to hold on to a point against Chris Wilder’s side, after midfielder Kalvin Phillips had stroked home a volley to equalise following Billy Sharp’s close-range opener within three minutes.

With the clock ticking, the Blades wrapped up all three points as wonderkid David Brooks came off the bench to squeeze a shot past goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, opening up a gap at the top of the table.

Leeds manager Thomas Christiansen looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Cardiff City and Leeds United at Cardiff City Stadium on September 26, 2017 in Cardiff, Wales.

Former Leeds striker Deane took to his personal Twitter account after the match to deliver his verdict, stating that he believes it was a “fair result on reflection”.

However, Deane also believes that the Whites need to sign a “quick centre-forward” if they are to keep pace with the Championship big boys until the end of the season.

Thomas Christiansen manager of Leeds United looks on before the Carabao Cup Third Round match between Burnley and Leeds United at Turf Moor on September 19, 2017 in Burnley, England.

Summer signing Pierre-Michel Lasogga was hardly given a sniff all match as Sheffield United started with three central defenders, including the impressive Cameron Carter-Vickers who is currently on loan from Tottenham.

The loss is Leeds’ fourth Championship defeat in their last five league outings, leaving the Whites way down in fifth and six points adrift of second place.

Christiansen will be hoping his side can put it right against Derby County on Tuesday night, as the Whites play host to Gary Rowett’s side.

Three points could see Christiansen’s side regain their momentum and climb into fourth, but they will be without goalscoring midfielder Phillips who earned his fifth yellow card against the Blades.
