Many fans and pundits alike have had their say on the troubles surrounding Aston Villa as of late, with the club being a far cry from the powerhouse it once was. The last few years have seen a great deal of turmoil both behind the scenes and in the starting XI, and supporters will be hoping their next managerial appointment can help to turn things round. As reported by Fox Sports, former Villa midfielder Brett Holman has commented on his time with the Midlands side.

The 32-year-old Australian moved to the club from AZ Alkmaar, however his tenure lasted just over a year following what he described as quite the bleak situation.

“If you look at it now, as to when I was there (2012-13), I was halfway through the phase of a sinking ship in a sense, if you talk how big the club is, and they are huge.” said Holman.

“But it was just a shambles, all over the place. It was a sinking ship and they got relegated and were an absolute disgrace last year. Thankfully they got new owners in and I wish them all the best because the people around the club are just fantastic, proper club people working for years there.

“My time, though, was doomed from day one. You walk in to do your medical and the manager that brought me in (Alex McLeish) is walking out with his boxes! I said ‘what’s happening?’ He said: “just got sacked”.”

Holman has been on quite the journey throughout a career that has seen him play in Holland, England and Dubai before eventually returning back home to play for Brisbane Roar. He also has over 60 caps for his national side, during which he even managed to score at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
