Brett Emerton has told Goal.com that he believes Daniel Arzani should have avoided a move to Celtic and instead joined a Dutch Eredivisie club instead in terms of improving his development.

Arzani, 19, moved to the Scottish champions from Manchester City on a two-year loan, after the Australian World Cup star joined Pep Guardiola’s side from City’s feeder club Melbourne City on a permanent basis.

Despite appearing for Australia at the World Cup in Russia, the highly-rated teenager is yet to make a single appearance for the Hoops since joining Brendan Rodgers’ side on loan.

Linked with PSV Eindhoven and PEC Zwolle, Arzani chose to ignore a move to Holland instead join Celtic but Emerton – who joined Feyenoord before moving to the Premier League – believes that could turn out to be the wrong choice for the fleet-footed attacker.

“I think for his development it would’ve been a better move if I’m honest,” Emerton said. “But that’s not to say he can’t go to Celtic, spend one or two seasons performing well and get a big move from there.

“I’m hopeful he’ll do well. I want our national team to do well and for that we need our players in the biggest leagues week in, week out. That should be his ambition.”

Arzani caught the eye of City and indeed Celtic after scoring two goals and creating another three assists in 24 senior appearances in Australian soccer.

He has plenty of work to do to break into Celtic’s senior side, with the likes of James Forrest, Scott Sinclair, Mikey Johnston, Jonny Hayes and Lewis Morgan all looking to feature for the Hoops out wide.

However, Arzani did find the back of the net for Celtic’s reserve side last time out with an excellent free-kick during a 2-0 win over Aberdeen. It is unlikely that he will feature against Rosenborg on Thursday.
