Celtic are interested in snapping up Jonny Evans as Brendan Rodgers eyes a deal for the experienced defender.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is chasing a reunion with central defender Jonny Evans.

That is according to the Liverpool Echo, who have been ruling out a move to Everton for Evans.

They claim that Rodgers is keen to take Evans to Celtic this summer with the defender now a free agent.

Evans has been released by Leicester City this summer and is now looking for his next club.

Evans and fellow Northern Irishman Rodgers worked together at Leicester and could now reunite in Glasgow.

The 35-year-old is currently back training with former club Manchester United but that arrangement is just to keep fit until he can find a new team.

Jonny Evans doesn’t fit Celtic transfer mould

We can understand why Rodgers may like Evans in terms of the leadership and experience he can provide.

Yet it’s hard to imagine that Celtic will be pushing to sign Evans given their current transfer policy.

Celtic have snapped up Australian wings Marco Tilio, who only turns 22 next month.

The Bhoys are on the verge of two more signings with South Korean duo Yang Hyun-jun and Kwon Hyeok-kyu – 21 and 22 respectively – set to join.

Celtic are going for young talent from lesser-utilised markets with a view to developing them into stars, possibly seeking profit down the line.

Evans is the complete antithesis of that approach, an ageing defender who – if we’re going to be blunt – has his best days behind him.

Even on a free transfer, it would be a surprise to see Celtic push to bring in Evans.

Evans would be reminiscent of Kolo Toure’s arrival

This feels eerily similar to the deal Rodgers struck for Kolo Toure back in 2016.

Rodgers took the Celtic job and pounced to sign a veteran defender from his previous club in Toure.

The Ivorian was 35 at the time and only made 17 appearances for the Bhoys before hanging up his boots.

Here were are again; Rodgers is back in the Celtic dugout and allegedly chasing a 35-year-old centre back from his last club.

Evans only played 13 Premier League games last season and may make just about the same impact as Toure if he ends up joining Celtic.
