Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has been boosted by the news that Leigh Griffiths looks set to come back from injury.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has said to the Scottish Herald that Leigh Griffiths looks set to be in their squad for the first time this season at the weekend.

Griffiths has been out injured since pre-season, but appears to be edging closer to fitness.

It is a timely return for Griffiths, as Moussa Dembele has been ruled out with injury.

And Rodgers said: “Leigh will be back in the squad. He has been out for a while. He needs to get his fitness up. He has been working hard at trying to get that up. We have kept him behind to work on that side. He will be in the squad for the weekend hopefully.”

Griffiths goes into this season as Celtic’s third choice forward, following the addition of Odsonne Edouard on a permanent transfer.

Celtic have already won in Europe in Griffiths’ absence, but they will be concentrating on league matters at the weekend.

Rodgers’ side kick off their title defence with a match against Livingston tomorrow, and they are heavy favourites to pick up the three points.

Griffiths looks most likely to start on the substitutes’ bench, but the pressure is on the former Wolves man to prove his worth, if he is to ensure he gets regular game-time when Dembele does make his return from injury.
